After a few days, a much larger turtle began to appear. She'd come up on shore and seemed to have no fear of us at all. Several mornings we got up to find her tracks all over the campsite, and she'd be in the middle of a large hole that she'd dug trying to lay some eggs. The one time she did lay eggs, she smashed them all when she tried to cover them up. She even dug up the sand right in front of our fire place one night. We started to call her "Stalker Turtle" because she spent so much time in the water watching us, looking for another opportunity to come up on shore or watching where she had just dug another hole.
This was not a small turtle by any stretch of the imagination. We were very careful around her because her jaws were big enough and strong enough to take a finger or toe right off without much effort on her part.
