Stalker Turtle

Postby Gail & Steve Collins » Fri Jun 26, 2009 7:37 pm

During our stay on Site 143

this June, we learned that this site is a favorite of turtles during the egg laying season. We were first visited by a number of small turtles, mostly Painted Turtles, who were maybe 4-6 inches in size. They'd pop their heads up in the water off shore, and then eventually come up on the beach and sandy hill in an attempt to deposit some eggs. These small turtles were very skittish and they'd race back to the water at the slightest movement by us.

After a few days, a much larger turtle began to appear. She'd come up on shore and seemed to have no fear of us at all. Several mornings we got up to find her tracks all over the campsite, and she'd be in the middle of a large hole that she'd dug trying to lay some eggs. The one time she did lay eggs, she smashed them all when she tried to cover them up. She even dug up the sand right in front of our fire place one night. We started to call her "Stalker Turtle" because she spent so much time in the water watching us, looking for another opportunity to come up on shore or watching where she had just dug another hole.

This was not a small turtle by any stretch of the imagination. We were very careful around her because her jaws were big enough and strong enough to take a finger or toe right off without much effort on her part. I was able to get a bunch of pictures of her, but this one pretty much tells the whole story: Image

Wow! I think I would give her the right of way! She looks like she means business.

Awesome photo Gail... I bet you never choose that site again!

What time did she get out of the water? 6:30ish? If so, I think she was just waiting for the ice cream truck

Must have kept you two entertained. You had family over to didn't you? Did they get to see your new pet?

I was just looking at the fireplace on that site. Looks like the DEC re did a lot of fireplaces this past year. 8th lake had mostly new ones with the same design.

That one is several years old, and is badly disintegrating. Partly from expansion/contraction, and partly because campers used it as a pounding block.

Too bad as it is a nice design.

We just returned from our stay on Site 143
Click for more info!

. We did see a couple of smaller turtles.

We would like to help out by making sure that no one else is bothered by the 'Stalker Turtles'. We would like to volunteer to stay on Site 143
Click for more info!

for the rest of the summer so that no one is caught unaware by the turtles.

We also witnessed a bird battle where Geese were chasing Ducks that were chasing Sea Gulls.

I believe that the rating for Site 143

should be downgraded as a result of all of this and warnings should be put out regarding all of this animal activity! 8-)

Cozy Campers,

We are glad that you got a handrail. You will really like it!

We enjoyed meeting you and look forward to the next time!

We noticed that both you and Gail and Steve Collins also have volunteered to protect other campers from these turtles. Perhaps, between you, the Collins', and us, we could share Site 143

Stalker Turtle Relocated Babies!

Postby CampADK » Mon Jul 27, 2009 8:32 am

A bit late on our efforts to 'stalk the stalker'... but anyways...

Apparently Gails stalker turtle has had her 'pups' or whatever you call her babies, and has relocated them 'off site' (get it? lol). I found one of them in the channel just before the last bend going up into Upper Saranac on June 29th.

Wow, that's a big one, too. Did you notice that our turtle had a scored shell and this one has a smooth shell?

That is the difference between a snapping turtle (original stalking turtle) and a slider and a painted turtle (two different turtles). You may find their nests near the beach area or next to the bike path just as you come down toward the beach. Raccoons will dig them up for a fresh mountain breakfast, and you thought that sizzling of bacon in the morning was from the campers.

Raccoons around Fish Creek? Never seen any in the area.

Seen them in Algonquin Provincial Park though...

They seem to be really interested in teardrop trailers...

You have to bribe them to take there mind off of the camper...

They probably think they hit the jackpot, one monster turtle egg. You are brave to get that close to a family of them, they can get really nasty. At least they weren't porkies.
