Campsite Photo Database Enhancements

Postby CampADK » Wed Oct 17, 2012 8:42 pm

I've been working on the addition of another 7 or so state/DEC campgrounds to the Campsite Photo Database. In the process I have added a few enhancements to the Parkware Management Software, the most noticeable to the user is the coloring of site numbers. This allows you to easily spot and browse just the watersites if you choose. Useful for most campgrounds, except maybe Fish Creek, since almost all the sites are on the water already :D

You can also easily switch to another campground to see what they have to offer as well, or to compare different campgrounds.

In the next while, I'll be moving the Campsite Photo Database for other campgrounds to a new site I have been prepping on our campadk.com domain. The new site will be dedicated to 'Waterside Camping in New York State' and will feature state and DEC campgrounds across the state, although mainly just the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes and 1000 Islands region. Next summer I'll be doing a spring blitz to add many of the other great campgrounds many of us already enjoy including (a preliminary list):

Nicks Lake
Delta Lake
Lake Eaton
Moffitt Beach
Northampton Beach
Rogers Rock
Higley Flow
Verona Beach
Lincoln Pond
Popular Point
Little Sand Point

Several of the campgrounds on Lake Ontario/1000 Islands area.

Considering the 'theme' of the new site is waterside camping, I'll be looking for campgrounds that offer at least some water sites. Considering the Finger Lakes region offers some great waterfall, gorges and off course wineries to visit, I'll be including the likes of Letchworth and Watkins Glen (already in the database).

Any others that you would highly suggest? Let me know.

I have lots of other ideas and features to incorporate in the future to help in creating the ultimate resource for planning your lakeside camping trip to destinations across the state. Definately a work in progress!

Ideas and feedback always appreciated!

Cheers

Just added Fair Haven Beach State Park this morning to the Campsite Photo Database.

Only 2 left to go... Limekiln and Wellesley Island.

Dave,

You are great! This is probably the only way I will be willing to go try other campgrounds! I've had friends say that Rogers Rock, Moffitts Beach, Lake Eaton and Northampton are all good. So, soon I might venture to somewhere else but Rollins' will always be my home away from home. :D

Thanks for making this your passion! I love it!

Your welcome to suggest other campgrounds too! Maybe we can 'spread the love' around a bit and send folks elsewhere besides FCP/RP

I've loaded up Wellesley Island, but only have a handful of sites coded/accessible. That is another great place that many campers, to the south mainly, likely overlook.

The only negative I had camping at Moffitt was the aweful/dirty bathrooms/showers. Mind you that was a few years ago, but it has deterred us from returning.

Haven't been to North Hampton but it looks really nice in the few photos I have found.

Lewey Lake and Limekiln Lake are great choices. We already have a reservation for Lewey Lake in June. It has a real mix of sites with some great waterfront sites, and many that are off the beaten path for the hermits amongst us.

I spent too much time taking campsite photos at Limekiln to get a chance to paddle there. We definately have to go back!

I should add Cranberry lake to the list as well. Its a close alternative to Fish Creek and is on a really nice lake. We have visited a few times and camped there once with the Teardrop gang.

Will be a busy spring no doubt. Hoping for some great photographing weather!

Our family went to Wellesley for 19 years. Started with a pop up to a 24 foot trailer. Then to a 30 foot. Unfortunately, there are not many water sites for 30ft trailers. The 20 ft site we used most years worked well for our 30ft. But the friends we camped with didn't have as great luck with theirs. So this past year we started going to Kring Point.

Thats what I noticed about Wellesley Island. If you want the best waterfront sites, you need to live in a tent or smaller trailer. The more campgrounds we visit, the more I am happy have either a 19ft trailer or 10ft trailer.

I did a quick check on Kring Point. Looks pretty nice! We'll be in the neighbourhood on a spring camping trip next year. Might just have to add that one to the list!

No, please don't!!! Very few prime sites and i don't want more competition at one of my very favorite CGs!!! Just kidding of course but it really is a nice place. If you are going to go, stay a couple nights. Well worth it.

Now then... where else should we be camping? Allow me to clarify. Where else are your favorite sites located?

Coles Creek has some waterfronts. Also Barnhart in Massena, they have a few. They added sites a few years ago. Good boating, especially for big boats and jet skis. Blake in South Colton (not at state campground) has some waterfronts.

In talking the 1000 Island theme I hear Jacques Cartier is nice but that is one I have not made it to yet. planned on driving over when I go to Kring in July just to scope it out. Many nice water sites frm what I hear.

Beyond NY, there are certainly some great provincial parks here in Ontario that many NYers might be interested in such as Bon Echo, Charleston Lake, Algonquin. NH certainly offers some great options as well for waterside camping which is why we are returning there for two weeks next summer... well assuming nobody breaks a limb or throws their back out like this year  . We sure did our part adding to the Reserve America cancellation money pot. :D

Internet Explorer was having lots of issues trying to handle the Campsite Photo Database.
It's not pretty, but at least I have it working ok now for IE users. As always, I highly recommend using any browser EXCEPT IE. :D

I've also added links to campground maps for each of the campgrounds that have been added to the Campsite Photo Database.

Still haven't been successful in getting IE to be able to display the Map Navigator properly. Probably never will.

Thanks for your effort with IE. That is the only one I can use at work.

Really? Most stuck on Windows usually use at least some flavor of Mozilla (Firefox). They won't let you use anything but IE?
