How's Letchworth as far as cleanliness? (ie: Bathrooms / Showers) Letchworth is in our 8-9 hr day drive range and we've considered going if we can't get a lot at FC this year. I'm a bit of a germophobe when it comes to public washrooms so I'm always curious about that situation in a park.

Also, are the lots nice and level? We have a 10x15 tent and find sometimes the parking pad is great, but the actual grassy / dirt area to set up the tent can be less than ideal.

Hope you're enjoying your travels! 8)

Bathrooms / Showers are average I would say. Kate says they are better than Fish Creek. Each toilet features a long bar holding a whopping 8 rolls of toilet paper so you shouldn't run out. They aren't as frustrating to use as at FCP either

The bathrooms have hot water taps only as well as a hand dryer. Showers are a decent size. One washroom per loop. 2 showers on the womens side, 2 on the mens side.

Each loop is pretty small, maybe 30 sites? Sites are varied. Some are quite grassy. Lots have a gravel base (not so tent friendly). Many are not so level, some are pretty wet, at least right now with all the rain. I'll try to get a variety of photos tomorrow if I get a chance. Leaving for Keuka Lake SP on Thurs for 2 nights, then on to Watkins Glen which I mistakenly thought was closed.

Do you have a site booked at Letchworth? If so, let me know and I can check it out for you.

It's a HUGE park. Miles of great winding road along the Gorge. Countless vistas. Water is really flowing right now. Locals say it is rarely this much. For such a huge park, I am amazed at how well everything is up kept. Countless stone picnic tables, walkways and stone walls, all in excellent shape. Play areas for kids and even a pool if I am not mistaken.

Some of the walls around the gorge are only 6 inches high! I am amazed considering all the people and kids that no doubt visit. Hand holding is a must if you have toddlers with such shear drops abound (hundreds of feet)!

I have a lots of photos to post later.

Thanks for the info Dave! No, no lot booked yet, we're really hoping something opens up at FC during the week that our relatives are there in August. If it looks like that's not happening, we're considering Letchworth.

My son was married in May 2003 at Letchworth. They were supposed to get married at Inspiration Point overlooking the falls but guess what ---IT RAINED -- so it was moved indoors to the Trailside Lodge. Everyone got drenched just getting from the parking lot to the lodge. Rain on your wedding day is supposed to be a good omen but unfortunately it didn't work out that way.

Sorry to hear that Gail (making some assumptions here).

Tell Steve I had a burger for him at Tom's. Forgoed the root beer for a strawberry shake. Drive in feature wasn't working today!

We have lots of photos of the 'abyss' at Inspiration Point. It was completely socked in yesterday. Couldn't see down into the Gorge. Was spooky!

Sylvie,

If you do book Letchworth let me know. I took photos of every campsite today while Kate did laundry.

I was rewarded for my quick work with a bunch of free pinball games in the park laundry matt. Kate snagged a newly designed Letchworth euro for the Airstream.

Life is good. Camp a lot.

Heading to Keuka tomorrow. Might stay or head to Watkins Glen for 3 or so days. Dr Franks and area wineries are on the near term agenda as per much appreciated suggestions.

Now I am truly envious! The 5 county area around Rochester is blessed with a number of good burger joints. Tom Wahl's, in my opinion, is a front runner for the best of the best.

We don't have places around here like that, at least that I have found so far.

I hope you enjoyed that burger!

Left Letchworth today and headed to Watkins Glen. Finally found those killer hills someone mentioned. Good work out on the transmission and brakes!

Lovin Watkins already. Our kind of place. We have the whole campground to ourselves for now and snagged a great site with partial view of the lake below. Will probably stay for 4 nights. Lots of free firewood stacked on every campsite! nice!

Looks like tomorrow is wine touring up around Keuka Lake (Dr Franks etc).

While here I'll be taking photos for the campsite photo browser.

Don't forget Bully hill, not so much for the wine but for the entertainment. It used to be best when Walter himself would give the tour and tasting. Pick up a bottle of Le Goat just to say you have joined the rebellion. Down with corporate wine and up with the independent vintner!!

Years ago (still married to wife #1), we visited Bully Hill. It had only been open a few years, and Walter was in the middle of his feud with Taylor Wine. We had finished the tour, and had just sat down for lunch in the restaurant when this teddy bear of a guy with a big floppy hat and moustache to match plops himself down at our table. He whips out a bottle of his best champagne and three glasses, pours 'em out and chats with us for 5 minutes or so. Before we finished lunch, he had made his way all around the restaurant, spending time with everyone in the room. What a class act he was.

The original goat was still there at the time, too.

Here's another tidbit. Walter had his own airport, complete with a paved runway, built up behind the winery. http://members.tripod.com/airfields_fre ... rvangelder
