Re: black bears

Not personally, but every year I hear stories. There's always a bear warning at the front gate.

They're definitely out there. Especially near the sites with the woods across from them.

It would be cool to put a trail cam in the area of recent sightings.

Re: August 1-5, 2019

We will be there for our first time this coming weekend and looking forward to it. We are first year boat owners and this will be a new experience. Needless to say I am a bit more confident driving the boat and truck/trailer in certain areas than she is. We are staying at site 175. Will this be an ...

Re: August 1-5, 2019

Also, from site 198, about 100 feet out, there's a sandbar where it's only about 2-3 feet deep. Be careful in that area as well.

I marked it in red here on the map for you:

August 1-5, 2019

I stayed on site 198. I normally camp closer to the boat launch, but this site had better sand in the beach area. My relatives stayed on site 36 and the beach in front of their site was all muck. I don't remember it being like that- we used to keep the boat in front of site 35 and 50 when we stayed ...

Re: Canvas cleaners

I use laundry detergent and water with a brush to clean my boat canvas, and then treat it with 303 protectant after it dries.

If it's sunbrella, you can add a cup of bleach to the mix if there's a lot of mold or mildew on it. Just test it out first to make sure it doesn't stain.

I never knew there was 24/7 gas on Upper Saranac.

Any idea if that still exists? Hopefully it's high octane, ethanol-free.

Re: Site 3?

The ultimate setup would be having your own portable dock. I've seen people do it but I have no idea how much of a hassle it is to set one up.

I think campadk has one, maybe he can share what he does for his setup.

Re: Webcams for NY Lakes, Ponds & Rivers

I originally started this because I wanted to look on a webcam to see how crowded the boat launches were on any given day. I e-mailed DEC about this a few years ago, and never received a response. Funnily enough, I did notice a security camera installed on our local ramp (Sacandaga) shortly after I ...

You'll be fine.

I usually do bow-out, one anchor off the bow and a shore stake off the stern.

Webcams for NY Lakes, Ponds & Rivers

I put together a list of webcams for most lakes, ponds and rivers in NY. Since the weather changes so quickly in the ADKs, I found it useful to check the webcam to see the actual conditions before heading out for the day. http://chrisleoonline.com/new-york-webcam/ I couldn't figure out how to copy a...

It's still owned by the Hickok's according to the Franklin County tax map.

Re: Is a kayak/canoe REALLY a boat?

About misinformed, I have been run over by such a boat when in a sail canoe with the sail up by a what I would call a to large boat. It was operated by someone who thought traveling at high speeds across the ponds was a normal thing while pulling teenagers on skis. They also thought it was a good i...

Re: Is a kayak/canoe REALLY a boat?

Many times there are groups of day use people that just come in the park to paddle the creek. Though there are also people that could launch and land their craft at the picnic area they don't realize there is another way. If you have a boat that is 4000 lbs with a 200 hp engine, you are on the othe...
