If we are staying at Brown Tract, for example, and we want to go check out Nick's Lake, Lake Durant, etc. Do we have to pay to get in to the other campground to look around?

Nope! If you have your camping permit you are more than welcome to visit another DEC campground. Early season you can even just drive in any pretty much without a permit. If you just want to go in an check out a campground, most will just let you in with no permit anytime (my experience anyways).

I was just at Lake Durant last week to take campsite photos (I have 275 to add to the campsite photo database for Durant).

Something else a lot of people don't know -- if you are camping at a DEC or NYS campground, your permit is valid for the entire day you check out. You have to be off the site by a specific time (usually 11:00 a.m.), but you can go park at the beach or designated parking area and spend the day swimming, paddling, picnicking, etc. :)
