TearUp the ADK 2014 Photo Trip Report

Postby CampADK » Wed Jun 11, 2014 8:28 pm

Back from the 10th Anniversary of the TearUp the Adirondacks camping event which is held at Fish Creek every year in June.

We had a great turnout with about 60 campers attending, perfect weather on the weekend and blackflys on occasion that were pretty selective on who they would bite! Kate managed to limit her take to just one bite all weekend, Ruth had hundreds!

Hilites included our usual Thursday night campfire for which the rain stop for just in time at 8pm, Friday nights beer sampling on Randy's site, a super paddle up to the beach on Floodwood Pond with close up viewings of 2 loons, a deer and a young bald eagle, the Saturday night wine and cheese and the subsequent steal-a-gift game which is always a big hit. About a 1/3 of campers stayed on an extra night (Sunday) so we had another campfire gathering at John and Claudettes site.

A few photos from the event. Be sure to check out the amazing shots we got on our paddle of the wildlife!:

On a side note, Andy and Suzanne on Site 203

had their brand new fireplace explode on them. Luckily they had just got up to go to bed and were not hurt by the flying cement. They did not have a large campfire burning at the time, although a few pieces of firewood were leaning up against the back of the fireplace.

Apparently this is the second exploding fireplace. This is an issue the DEC is now investigating that affects only the newer cement forms that were poured in Ray Brook. There aren't many of these I believe. Anyways they are the new taller cement forms that are higher than most, and are lined with fire brick, but the fire brick does not go to the top of the back wall. There is also a slope on the back wall, unlike all the new fireplaces added over the last 3 or so years. The sloped section of the back wall is what blew out on Andy's site. The sloped area is above the fire brick. We were concerned ourselves about the fireplaces as we'll have our grandkids with us this year and we don't want to be fretting about the fireplace! Luckily our site has an older one.

You can see one of these new fireplace models on Site 203

. You'll notice the sloped section which has a bit chuck blown off it. DEC staff were investigating the fireplace when we left on Monday so hopefully they will have a solution shortly.
