CampADK Road Trip to Maine 2010

Postby CampADK » Sun Jun 20, 2010 9:07 am

Here on our first road trip with the Airstream. Thought I'd post a few photos and notes for anyone else interested in some great places we found to stay/visit!

Our goal on this trip was to spend 2 weeks camp, mainly waterside if possible with major destinations to include Squam Lake New Hampshire, and Acadian National Park in Maine.

Firstly we started at Fish Creek for the TearUp, headed through Vermont and one to our first major destination, Squam Lake, NH. Squam is best know as the location that the movie 'On Golden Pond' was shot, starring Katharine Hepburn, Jane Fonda and Henry Fonda in 1981. We hoped to take in the lake and find the various places where scenes of the movie were shot, including the marina, purgatory cove and of course the famous Thayer Camp. We also wanted to paddle and view Squam from one of the nearby mountains that offers spectacular views of the lake.

Our second main destination would be the Maine coast, in particular Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.

A few shots from some special places we have been to so far on this trip...

The marina in Holderness where the scene of Ethel and Norman coming in to gas up were shot...

The boat slips where Ethel went to get Charlie to head out to find Norman and Billy...

Kate paddling through 'Purgatory Cove'. Not the Purgatory Cove seen in the movie, although it may well be were the very first scene of the boat crash was shot...

Image

The actually area that was called 'Purgatory Cove' in the movie, located at the northwest tip of Kimball Island. Shot this from the pontoon boat on a boat tour of the lake.

Kate photographing a loon in Squaw Cove (north end of Squam Lake)...

Image

A stubborn turtle! He wasn't going to give up his spot even with us in close proximity...

Image

Heading out on the pontoon boat cruise...

Image

West Rattlesnake. We'd be hiking this mountain after the boat cruise to enjoy a panoramic view of Squam Lake from the summit...

Image

A couple watching the eagles nest on Loon or was it Little Loon Island...

Image

Should have brought my long lense for a close up of the eagle feeding its young...

Image

View from the pontoon boat tour. Lots of mountain views!

Image

Kate enjoying the phenomenal views of Squam Lake from the summit of West Rattlesnake...

Image

Looking down on Bennett Cove...

Image

Back on the water the next day. Our goal was reached! We found the 'Thayer Camp' at the narrows between Grand Island and Center Harbor Neck. Kate is a happy camper!

Image

Kate picks out a few 'souvenirs' from the lakeshore of the Thayer Camp...

Image

Long shot of the Thayer Camp. Note the gazebo is no longer at the point on the left. It has been relocated, probably back to its original location (see below). The boathouse was there back in 1981 but the film crew chose to film around it. Two docks can be seen in the movie. One is likely the one at the boathouse. The second was located right where Kate is in the shot above.

Sleuth Kate found the original gazebo that was relocated to the Thayer camp for the movie. It is actually located at a camp around the corner...

Now THIS is a snapping turtle!

On to Maine! Here we are at a FANTASTIC pub/restaurant in Camden, Maine. We didn't plan on eating out much, but ended up here for dinner twice in a row since the food was so great. Its called Cappies and is right on the main drag...

Our souvenir from Camden...

We are now at Moorings Oceanfront RV Resort in Belfast, Maine. We managed to reserve the best site on the coast! Site 20

Great view from the camper!

After main full days of activities we are relaxing today (and yesterday) and then heading on to the Bar Harbor KOA to take in Acadia National Park for 3 days.

More later.

Cheers

Not much time for posting as there is lots for us to see and do in Acadian, but here is one of my finer shots from here at the Bar Harbor KOA the other evening. Our Airstream is back there on the water...

As usual we manage to be camping on or near a full moon!

You're KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to postpone our October 2010 trip because of our wedding next year. We will be staying on MT Desert Island for our honeymoon in October 2011 in a House rental right on the water.
We were just there in October ourselves.
