Kayaking

Postby Can't Wait! » Sat May 14, 2016 3:36 pm

Are there any Kayak enthusiasts that could help me out? I'd like to get into it with my kids this summer, but not sure where to start.
I found sit on top kids kayaks on sale so I thought I'd start with those for my 5 & 7 year olds. However, I need something cheap for myself, that will accommodate my big girl size. Any suggestions?

We are at FC starting July 11, so I need to get it figured out soon. Renting seems like it might be too expensive.

What is your budget to spend? Do you have any kayak dealers near you? Most kayak stores have a way for you to try before you buy.....Next weekend is Paddlefest in Old Forge.....That would be the ideal place for you to try many different kayaks to find the one for you.

Mountain Man has a store in Saratoga Springs....Might be an option to see and try some kayaks....

Thanks Phil, I'm in Scotia, so the Saratoga store might work. I don't know much about the costs, could $200 get me an entry level kayak?

You might find used ones on Craigslist or in Free Traders. We have been happy with our basic model sit in ones from Dick's Sporting Goods. I never tried a sit on one, but those seem more tippy to me. Hauling them may require buying racks.

You will probably have a hard time finding one at that price....At least one that will work the way you want it too....I would call Mountain Man and see if they have any used ones....

If you're all newbies, consider renting from Hickoks before you spend a bunch of $ on your own. You may find out it's not for you. That would suck if you were already in for multiple hundreds of dollars and decided you didn't enjoy it. They drop off/pick up everyday. Our friends rented last year, I believe it was roughly $30/day per kayak. And, this way you won't need to lug them up there and home.

Good luck and enjoy your time at FC!
