Verizon Cell Tower Forthcoming in Lake Clear

Postby CampADK » Sat May 07, 2016 3:12 pm

Yes most people who head out camping to places like Fish Creek like the fact that there has been poor cell/internet service at Fish Creek. Yet there are some of us that can get out camping more if we can stay connected, including myself. Having said that, there is news that the APA has approved a Verizon tower in Lake Clear, just north of the campground which will provide us with 4G LTE service... not until 2017 however.

It will be located near Lake Clear on a hillside off of Forest Home Road, and will provide coverage for Lake Clear, Saranace Inn, West side of Upper Saranac down to about the Young Life Camp (ie upper half of Upper Saranac), Fish Creek Pond Campground (looks like maybe some of Rollins will get coverage too).

Read the whole article at http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.co ... id/562224/ (it may or may not display the whole article for you).

Can someone let me know how the cell coverage is when they get up there this spring? :D

Checked last week. Seemed to be 2-3 sometimes 4 bars LTE but sometimes slipped to 1X. Not convinced yet this is the new tower. Might be just the lack of vegetation on the trees. Didn't seem to be a stronger signal in the Forest home area which is where the tower is.

Will likely be there next week so will follow up then.

Hi Dave, Any update on the cell service at Fish Creek? Also what carrier were you using?
Unfortunately it looks like I'll need to check in a couple of times a day on my laptop during our June trip. Our campsite is in the 180's.

Yes I did some test again last week and was getting mainly 2-3 bars LTE with verizon. The data throughput wasn't all that great, but it seems to be more reliable than last year thats for sure. One comment I heard was that the signal may not be all that great due to the use of the fake tree technic used to camoflash the tower.

The south site of Square pond was usually 2 bars LTE.

Like everywhere else in the ADKs, Verizon is the way to go.

Thanks for the quick response. I've been roaming with Rogers for years, but I think it is time to pick up a Verizon sim. Most days I can barely get email.

Yay, maybe this year I won't have to go across the street from my site to pick up a signal and freeze where I am so I don't lose said signal, LOL.

But I am not telling anyone, I would rather they not know they can reach me by phone if need be cause you know they will need to!

I checked with Verizon Customer Service yesterday. They still show the new tower as "not yet in service". Their database has an "in service" field for each tower and this one is still blank. So I suspect it is not energized yet which would explain the reports of no real change. I even chatted with the clerk at the Santa Clara town office and she agreed nothing has changed yet for her cell phone.

I did track down the address for the tower itself: 598 Forest Home Rd, Lake Clear. If you Google Earth that address, you can see a very long skinny property with the south-eastern end rising up on a significant hill - a logical spot for tower. It appears to be approximately 70 to 80 compass degrees from North from the shores of Fish Creek. Approximately 6 miles away.

Hopefully it will come online before the season wraps up (coming up ourselves early Sept) - if not, there is alway next year!

So many conflicting reports! We have been getting 2 bars LTE on a large portion around the pond this year, much better than last year (Verizon). Some areas much better than last years, other areas the same. Newspaper reported it was installed last December on Forest Home Road. Was odd though that signal on Forest Home Road was none existent.

I agree hard info seems difficult to come by. The article published May 2016 indicated "Verizon Wireless spokesman Andrew Testa wrote in an email that the new tower will provide 4G LTE ....... He said the new tower would be online sometime in 2017". http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/news/local-news/2016/05/apa-oks-lake-clear-cell-tower/

I would suspect that if you are not getting coverage on Forest Home Rd itself nor is the town clerk's office in Lake Clear, then the improvements you are seeing so far this year are perhaps related to improvements on existing towers. If someone has a way to tell the direction of the incoming signal that would help define the situation. The existing tower that best serves the Ponds is in Tupper direction while the "under construction" tower is almost the opposite direction. I use a directional specific signal amplifier/antenna so I'll play with that when I come up in Sept.

I'll also post an update when Verizon Customer Service indicates the tower is "online".

Hmmm...misplaced my Draft so I'll try again.....

Spent a wonderful 16 days up there in late Aug/early Sept. Very impressive dock Dave! :)

On to the cell tower..... Drove out Forest Home Rd (about 2.6 miles east from Rt 3) - found the Verizon location and indeed full 4G strength. However, it fades rapidly as you drive back out to Rt 3 and then drive south on 3 back to FCP. And indeed my directional amplified antenna seemed to get the same result (1x) whether I pointed it south towards the existing Tupper tower or now northish towards the new tower. I did get short "glimpses" of 4G but never lasted. I spoke with a local who indicated the new tower has low capacity at this time due to a small bandwidth supply connection from Time Warner to the tower. Hopefully Verizon is working to beef that up. But at least for now, it appears the new tower - as currently operated - is not the panacea we had hoped for. Maybe next year!

Thanks for posting that info! Explains a lot. Couldn't figure out why it would take so long to get the tower in service.

I have a Wilson Antenna and amplifier which works well on our travels but never has, and still does not work to boost the Verizon signal at Fish Creek. I can increase the number of bars but it seems whatever signal is coming from Verizon, it is not compatible with modern day amplifiers. I have used it to boost a virtually none existent signal at a state park in NH to get a data connection, just not useable at Fish Creek.
