Survey - Ice Chest Recommendations

Okay... so a trusty old small ice chest finally bought the farm after a 15 years of service. It was a smallish plastic Coleman that took a beating, but still managed to keep ice for 3 days in 80F/30C weather. Small though, as it left little room for the soda/beer and other things. I gotta replace it...

Re: Severe Storm Hits Fish Creek!

A little story of my experience... Shortly after the storm blew through, I confirmed all was relatively okay with those around me, and extended offerings of help and resources (tarps, bungees, etc...) where needed. With DEC trucks and vans whizzing by, I decided to stand clear and headed to Trading ...

Re: Camp Site Sign Replacement

They have refurbished a few bathrooms at FCP this year and replaced 42 fireplaces actually. IIRC..... DEC is very resourceful with conserving (Imagine that! A Conservation Dept that conserves!) natural resources and recycling. Most wood for signage is salvaged from other projects, or recycled in so...

**Driving - Construction near Albany

Just a note to travelers coming to the ADK's from the south....most GPS's won't report this. There is a considerable amount of road construction around Albany that causes a lot of problems... Along I-787 along the Hudson River in Downtown Albany, just south of the I-90 interchange. Down to about 5mp...

Re: Gear and Firewood Thieves!

habs, It's a poor rule and if they want you to park your cars in an overflow then they need to make better areas. Maybe next to bathrooms and install overhead lighting. I can understand your point about the shoreline and such. And smaller sites like in the 1-20 area and some of the 40's and 50's I ...

Re: Irresponsible Dog Owner

It should be well known at this point that the CG is severely understaffed this year. Steve I can only venture that this is because of the budget issues. And without getting too political / setimental / etc. it makes my blood boil. What gets me is that the revenue generated by FCP goes back to DEC ...

Re: Don't Cut Those Trees!

Apparently they had a variety of cutting tools including a electric chainsaw. They were cutting all the trees and brush along the waterfront to improve their view of the water... What the ...? My thoughts exactly. Who does this?!?  ~sylvie Standing in water using an electric c...

Re: Gear and Firewood Thieves!

Yet, the park is staffed enough to make a big deal about 3 vehicles on a site. Not staffed enough...occupied by over 1200 campers when fully booked. Staffed by about 15, or less. Not too mention with people wrecking property and stealing from vehicles why on earth would I put my vehicle in an overf...

Re: Gear and Firewood Thieves!

Suggestion, if you do a bit of camping, and leave expensive gear hanging out to dry, or whatever.... An easy investment that I've made is to use a hunting trail camera on a nearby tree when I am not at my campsite. Inconspicuous as it can be, it will photograph/video anyone on a site that shouldn't ...

Re: CampADK Trip Report June 30-July 13

Just getting around to posting an extremely lucky photograph I took at FCP in Mid-July. My sweetie gifted me a nice Canon T2i camera for Christmas, which I brought to FCP to capture some of nature. I wanted to try my hand at some "astro-photography" and all the amazing starlit nights. I ca...

Re: Road Construction Reports

Thanks all for the update... good info to have.

re: triathletes.... always give them a wide berth, and may a 'toot' of the horn. Much like the power boats and canoes on a lake, a little mutual respect and patience makes it enjoyable for all.

Road Construction Reports

Will be heading up in a few weeks...

Anyone have any road construction reports?

From the south -- Route 28 from Warrensburg, through North Creek, to Blue Mountain Lake, Indian Lake, Tupper Lake?

From the east -- Plattsburgh, Keene, Elizabethtown?

Reported facility problems - July 2010

There were some reports from campers about some problems at RP and FCP at the beggining of July. Namely, problems with fresh water, and hot showers not being available consistently. Rather than get all worked up, I thought I would give the folks at DEC a call to see if there was something going on b...

Travel Report/Road Construction?

Can anyone provide an update on the road conditions leading into FC? For the past several years, they have been upgrading the roads to the south (Rte 30) of Tupper Lake. Just wondering if it is complete, or should I just throw everything on the floor of my camper now, just to save some aggravation. ...

I have a couple of kids that have practically grown up at FCP. Two comments I hear from them, and others, over and over... Same silly bear program.... Same boring playground.... These have been outdated staples of FCP for decades. They need replacing. Suggestions?? -- Guided hikes and canoe trips. -...
