Re: Looks like USL is breaking up!!!

The camera works again and the lake appears to be free of its icy chains! Now we just need to eradicate the virus and hopefully the park can safely open and accept happy campers.

Looks like USL is breaking up!!!

Cameras don't lie, and the Chapel Island Cam is telling me that the lake is breaking up already. That's a solid month ahead of last spring. It may be time for a drive since I'm in lockdown with the rest of the state. I'll isolate in my car for 5 hours. 21 confirmed Covid cases in Saratoga County, wi...

Re: black bears

Back in the late 70's- early 80's there was a cub in a tree on our site. My grandfather was feeding him marshmallows, he would scurry down the tree, grab the marshmallow and scurry back up. When DEC showed up, they informed us that his mother had been killed a day prior and he was orphaned. DEC tran...

Re: Reservation Issues

I agree, whole-heartedly. Unfortunately, many people I know who booked sites for next summer did exactly that: booked a week in advance of their target week, with the expectation of cancelling the first week as soon as the cancellation window opens. To me, this approach does nothing more than limit ...

Re: Canvas cleaners

Spray 9 Marine works well also. I've used it with great success on my boat canvas and such. Spray on, scrub with a soft brush, rinse off. Done! Good luck!

Re: 2019 Campfire Wood

If you tell George you want the seasoned wood, he'll generally point you in the right direction. The stuff stacked right by his driveway is usually pretty green. The 'good stuff' is more toward the rear of his property (back where he splits it), but he'll let you grab it. Happy camping!!! On my way ...

Re: First timer

You could leave equipment, temporarily, at the amphitheater if you had to, or at the overflow area by the check-in booth. The boat launch is at Site 35 and the amphitheater area starts at about Site 50, Have a great time up there, it's an amazing place. I'll be there in 4 weeks! Can't wait! Happy ca...

Re: Site 3?

We bring a 4-piece, 32' wooden dock for our two boats. It's bulky and heavy, that's for sure. We also use 2x4 posts at both ends and at each section connection. Like Dave mentioned, the posts are a doozy, but we have a custom post pounder that fits over them. It's still quite the beating. Once we fi...

Re: Boat Rental

Hickoks Marina, right on the Ponds, does rent some boats. I believe a couple are still family-sized runabouts, but that may have changed. They weren't late-model boats, probably from the late 80's, but they'll get you around. I believe they had 50 hp outboards, skiing may be a challenge if your prog...

Northern Pike Heads on Trees...

I remember the first drive to the site after checking-in as a child, and seeing Pike heads nailed to trees all along the ponds. I guess everyone must have kept everything they caught back then, because it was a very popular activity, a kind of trophy display to reflect on the weeks catch. I've caugh...

The Old Green Garbage Truck

Does anyone else remember when each site had a green metal garbage can with the site number painted on it? Every morning the old green garbage truck came around and emptied each one. The cacophony of sound that old truck produced was a type of alarm clock as a child. Raccoons and bears ended that pr...

Raquette River Brewing

I had no idea these guys were here, but if you're looking for a break from FCP (for some reason), this may be the answer! Looks like they are down past the Raquette Pond park (where Woodsmans Field Days and the big flea market are held in Tupper Lake) on RT 3. I'll be making the journey one day just...
